Talent and competence. These has always been two terms that followed Nightwish since the beginning of the band in 1996. Now, exactly 12 years later, the Finns, in their new lineup (with the singer Anette Olzon in the place of Tarja Turunen - fired from the band in 2005 after the end of the show that originated the DVD "End Of An Era"), showed us one more time the reason why they are considered responsible for the popularity of the symphonic metal.
Sao Paulo was the stage for two shows of them - on November 07th (Friday) and 08th (Saturday), and even the persistent rain that fell on the capital on Friday was unable to lower the happiness of those who were present at Via Funchal.
The warming was provided by the band Hevorah (www.myspace.com/hevorahband), with the band Ravenland (www.ravenland.net) as special guests. Certainly, a good beginning for the night waiting head.
The opening act was accounted by "Bye Bye Beautiful", one of the major successes of the new album, which can be interpreted as an indirect allusion at the dismissal of Tarja Turunen. And, this being the first concert in the country with the new formation, I got the distinct impression that the song was chosen to advertise the "Beginning of a new era".
Many may not like the vocal style of Anette when compared to Tarja (and I certainly don't do part of this group, since their vocal styles are different, and, thus, there is no room for comparison here), but no one can say that she isn't a talented singer. At least, none of those presents at the concert on November 07th in Sao Paulo, which heard a voice even more powerful and enjoyable than that on the actual album "Dark Passion Play", chanting "Whoever Brings The Night", "Amaranth" and "Sahara" - performance that led the audience to shout in chorus her name, showing that for many, if not the most, the choice for Anette was the right by the band. Songs from previous albums such as "The Siren", "Wish I Had An Angel", "Dark Chest of Wonders" and, for the delight of older fans, "Sacrament of Wilderness" (referring to the band's second album, "Oceanborn") were also part of the show.

And on a night of giants, Marco Hietala proved why he is unparalleled in the musical scene. "The Islander" made even the more skeptical portion of the audience scream, and "Dead To The World" led Via Funchal to madness. "While Your Lips Are Still Red", theme for the finnish movie Lieksa! and a composition of Tuomas and Marco, also part of the single "Amaranth", demonstrated the versatility of a band whose greatest talent is the lyrics of its songs. Sung poems, created by a genius called Tuomas Huollopainen, unique in a musical universe where lyrics are trivialized and abused always by the same theme (sure, when they have one ...).
